January is Thyroid Awareness Month – $25 Amazon.com GC Giveaway

WINNER: Comment #21: Ashley S. I have emailed Ashley and she has 24 hrs to respond. Congrats!

Note: This is not a “deal” post, but something that I have experience with and feel is important to share with you.

I had no idea that January is National Thyroid Awareness Month. As someone who has dealt with thyroid issues for more than a decade, I wanted to participate in this awareness campaign when the folks at the Global Influence Network contacted me about it.

During a routine physical exam in my 20s, my internist detected the small goiters growing on my thyroid. After an ultrasound confirmed their existence and after some tests to rule out cancer, I started on Synthroid. Thankfully the nodules were caught early and haven’t grown since starting on medication.

The thyroid is a small gland located in the middle of the lower neck, which produces hormones that regulate many functions including temperature, weight gain, and weight loss. Many Americans experience various problems with the functioning of their thyroid. Some red flags to watch for are:

* sudden weight gain or increase in body fat
* inability to lose weight despite proper diet and exercise
* fatigue, insomnia or restless sleep, anxiety or panic attacks
* gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation
* chronic sinusitis or lingering infections

It is important that people experiencing these warning signs see their physician to learn more.
There are also many online resources for those seeking more information and support. One online resource is the Fibro 360 Community – Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Center. This online community not only offers a network of support, but also resources to those seeking more information about fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and related disorders including those concerning the thyroid.

If you’d like to learn more or would like to join the Fibro 360 Community, please visit Fibro 360 on Facebook. You can also follow Fibro 360 on Twitter.

Please vote for my video on Facebook

I have the opportunity to win a $10,000 vacation from ConAgra Foods and would like to ask for your help!

Back in September, I saw that ResourcefulMommy.com was hosting a Delicious Moments Twitter party, and the first 75 people to upload a video would receive a booklet of free coupons for ConAgra products and a $10 Walmart gift card. It seemed like an easy way to get some great coupons and a gift card. I never imagined my video would be in the running for a paid vacation!

Fifteen videos were selected from all the entries. The video with the most votes by November 9 will win. You can only vote one time. Unfortunately they don’t show how many votes each video has received so I don’t know if I’m way behind or in the running to win. If you are on Facebook and can vote for me, I would greatly appreciate it!

To watch my video and vote, go to http://apps.facebook.com/delicious-moments/.

My video is listed as “Susan Clot” (they left out part of my name) and I am standing in my garage with a yellow shirt on.

Thank you!

My Children’s Place Trip – 11/2

My daughter is going to a friend’s pajama birthday party soon, so we headed to The Children’s Place to use the 15% off printable coupon that was available online over the last few weeks. I found a bunch of clothes that were $1.99-3.99 and a couple of pairs of shoes at $7.99.

If you printed the coupon when it was available, it expires November 16. When you use the coupon, you should get a VIP Passbook with another 15% off coupon good from November 17-30. The Children’s Place will have a Black Friday event on November 27 with the “biggest savings of the year”. Stores will open at 5AM (with some opening at midnight).

I purchased everything in the photo for $83.10 after tax ($76.77 pre-tax). Pre-sale total would have been $293.90 (or $271.50 pre-tax). I plan to return the shoes, three shirts and a skirt as they didn’t fit right. It is easier to try on clothes at home than in the dressing room! Everything else should fit through the spring, and maybe even next fall.

I bought:

Six long-sleeved shirts ($1.99 for the faux layered shirts -3.99 for the other shirts, regularly $12.50 each or 2 for $18)
Two dresses ($3.99 each, regularly $16.50 and $19.50)
Four pairs of pants ($3.99 each, regularly $10.50-$16.50)
Four skirts ($3.99 each, regularly $12.50-$14.50)
One nightgown ($16.50 – not on sale)
Two pairs of shoes ($7.99 each, regularly $18.50 and $19.50)

FRENCH’S Cook-Off 2009

I am up late again and got the Twitter Moms RAMBO Alert about the FRENCH’S Cook-Off 2009 contest. The first 16 bloggers to enter the cook-off, write about it and post a comment on Twitter Moms will receive a grocery store gift card. Everyone who enters the Cook-off will be entered to win weekly prizes and a grand prize of $25,000 from FRENCH’S.

Recipes must be:

– include at least one FRENCH’S product
– take less than an hour to prepare/serve
– include fewer than eight ingredients (with the exception of salt, pepper and water)
– be your own creation and not published anywhere

Guess what I made for dinner Tuesday night? An experimental chicken dish that included FRENCH’S Classic Yellow Mustard, so I figured this is a contest that was meant for me to enter, right?

I don’t like to cook. I try to avoid it whenever possible, or I cook the same boring meals over and over again. But Tuesday night, something possessed me to get into experimental mode for dinner.

My daughter and I stopped by Target on the way home from her after school activity to pick up some Colby Jack cheese slices because I knew that was the only ingredient I didn’t have at home. I had three avocados (on sale at Sprouts through 10/14 – 3 for $1.00) and some chicken breasts (also from Sprouts). I had some bacon that needed to be eaten in the next few weeks, and, of course, the FRENCH’S Classic Yellow Mustard.

Here’s what I submitted to the FRENCH’S Cook-Off contest (not the best photo since it was in the refrigerator):

1. Set oven to bake at 350 degrees
2. Clean and prep desired number of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
3. Place chicken breasts in a glass cooking pan
4. Spray or brush desired amount of butter or margarine on top of each chicken breast.
5. Squirt or brush desired amount of French’s Classic Yellow Mustard on top of each chicken breast.
6. Place bacon strips on cookie sheet (number depends on number of chicken breasts you are cooking. I used one strip per breast).
7. Place chicken and bacon in oven. Cook for 10-12 minutes.
8. Turn over each chicken breast and apply butter/margarine and French’s Classic Yellow mustard.
9. Turn bacon over.
10. Return both chicken and bacon to oven and cook for another 10-12 minutes.
11. Remove bacon and dab with paper towel to soak up grease.
12. Once chicken is no longer pink, add slices of avocado (amount depends on your preference) and 1-2 strips of bacon to each chicken breast and top with a slice of cheese (I used Colby Jack).
13. Return pan to oven and cook for 2-3 minutes or until cheese has melted.
14. Remove from oven and serve! This can be served alone or in a hamburger bun.

The nice thing about this recipe is there are no measurements. You just throw together whatever amounts of each ingredient you want based on your preferences. I don’t know if 350 degrees is the best temperature to use for cooking chicken, because like I mentioned… I don’t cook. It worked out for me though.

I had to give my little creation a name, and being that it’s the middle of the night, I couldn’t think of anything creative. My first thought was of BLT sandwiches, so I called this CAB (Colby-Avocado-Bacon) Chicken.

With all the fabulous recipes that have been and will be submitted by much better cooks than me, I don’t expect to win this contest. My entry is very simple and kind of boring. But it included a FRENCH’s ingredient, it tasted good, it met all the requirements and I happened to have one serving left over so I could take a photo. I’m looking forward to seeing all the submissions and finding some new possibilities. Eight or fewer ingredients and less than an hour sound good to me.

Do you have a easy-to-prepare recipe that includes one or more FRENCH’S ingredients? If so, go here to submit it. Who knows…. maybe you’ll win one of the weekly prizes or the grand prize of $25,000!

And if you’re a blogger, check out the Twitter Moms contest. If 16 bloggers haven’t already left comments, you can still enter to win the grocery store gift card.

Groupon Dallas: Cultured Cup (Tea) & other cities

If you like tea and you live in Dallas, you’ll like The Cultured Cup. A former co-worker of mine told me about it when a group of us used to head out for tea breaks during the work day. Unfortunately The Cultured Cup was too far from my office for regular visits, but I have stopped in when I’m near Preston Center (Northwest Highway & Preston Road) and have always enjoy their teas – whether I get something brewed or take leaves home to brew later.

They specialize in:

– Mariage Frères Tea
– Leonidas Chocolate
– Drinking Chocolate
– Gourmet Coffee

Today’s Groupon* is for The Cultured Cup. With the Groupon, you can get $20 worth of tea, coffee, chocolate or other products for only $10. It looks like you can buy as many $10 Groupons as you would like (each Groupon has different limitations so be sure to read the fine print). I got a couple to use to purchase gifts for the holidays. They don’t expire until January 14, 2010. Check it out here.

* Groupon.com is a site that features a new deal for a local business each day. If a minimum number of people get in on the deal, it will be activated. If not, your credit card isn’t charged. You can change your order any time before the deal expires, so if you want to add to or delete your Groupon order before the deal expires, you can.

I have gotten in on four Groupons so far (The Cultured Cup will be my fifth) and I have been very happy with my purchases. Sign up for their email list if you want to be notified of the Groupon of the day.

ExpoTV & Tryology Program

I joined ExpoTV earlier this year and have since participated in two Tryology assignments and one paid assignment on shopping habits. I am about to complete a holiday shopping video assignment where I’ll earn points that I can redeem for various items, such as gift cards or products.

ExpoTV is currently taking applications for two Tryology assignments:

— Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs, Mister Salty Milk Chocolate Covered Pretzels
— Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs, Top Secret Flavor

If accepted, you will get free product and then will need to do a quick video review of your experience with the product (positive, neutral or negative). Watch this video overview.

You can sign up here if you are interested in participating in ExpoTV video reviews or the Tryology program.

$39.99 – Creative Labs Vado Pocket Video Cam

I won one of these bright pink Vado video cameras a few months ago at a Twitter party. At the time, it retailed for $99. Dell is now selling the pink and silver ones for $39.99!

Pros:
– Small and will fit easily in a purse or pocket
– 2X zoon
– Plugs right into your computer using USB
– Quickly upload videos to Photobucket or YouTube

Cons:
– Doesn’t come with a cover (at least mine didn’t). I worried about the lens getting scratched in my purse, so I bought a little case.
– Sound quality is poor if you are more than a few feet away
– Video quality is just okay. It’s definitely not as good as my regular size camcorder, but if you want to capture video and don’t want to lug a full camcorder around, this could be the right option for you.

I have used my Vado to complete three video reviews for ExpoTV. I received product for two and should receive cash for the third. If you participate in ExpoTV’s paid reviews, you could consider this purchase as a little investment to make some extra money.

Be sure to use Ebates.com to get 4% cash back, plus a $5.00 sign up bonus if you’re not already a member.

Thanks Saving Cents with Sense!
